High tech for ÖBB (Austrian National Railway) – power generation (Austria)

ÖBB’s hydro-electric power plants in Stubachtal have a 210 megawatt rating.

The plants produce the main part of ÖBB’s electricity supply. Obviously, the

control and monitoring of such a plant is laid into competent hands.

The gradual extension of the plants Schneiderau and Uttendorf in diverse preliminary reservoirs followed. The reservoirs provide water that is conducted via adits and penstocks to he plants’ turbines with generators. Due to a rating of 210 MW, Stubachtal’s plants are able to provide about half ofthe surge current required by ÖBB. Without own plants this current would have to be purchased.

Ing. Wolfgang Steiner, Stubachtal Group’s foreman concerning control requisites in the plant domain: “The entire Stubachtal plant group is controlled via SAT 230. This process control system is considered as one of the most innovative products in this field and also provides visualisation.” SAT 230 is a modified version of the process control system zenon by COPA-DATA qualified for automation of plants and transformer stations.
