Targeted energy management is not only of interest for cost-conscious companies. More and more countries are expecting companies to undertake energy audits and measures to reduce the consumption of raw material and negative impacts on the environment. Since June 2011 a worldwide standard is in place, supported by guidelines and instructions for systematic energy management in order to minimize energy consumption and reduce negative environmental effects: the ISO 50001:2011 standard.

The new standard replaces ISO 16001. Structurally, ISO 9001 meets the requirements for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management systems. Therefore, it can also be easily integrated as a basis for further management systems.


Consistent energy management according to ISO 50001 allows untapped potentials to be discovered, the improvement of existing measures and well-targeted action concerning energy consumption and emission reduction. Therefore, companies not only provide essential contributions to climate protection, they can profit themselves from more predictable consumption and related cost reductions and – not to forget – the improved image.

What can ISO 50001 do?

The new standard not only gives information regarding what an energy management system should do, it also supports by introducing targeted measures with instructions. Here, it is not just about quantitative measures, but about a continuous improvement process, which optimally manages energy consumption without negatively influencing the volume or quality of the production. Hence, the standard is based on a systematic approach, supporting process implementation.


Companies orientating their energy management system to ISO 50001 must define and naturally also document how they plan to meet the requirements. Of course, the field of application and the energy management system limits should also be precisely defined. Management and employees are all involved and take responsibility, to ensure long-term thinking and commitment.


The plan involves four phases of initial implementation and their validation, through to additional corrective action. Steps, which should obviously not only happen once, but which should be part of a continuous process.
