Energy Management in accordance with ISO 50001:

Valid data from HMI

Companies that create their energy management on the basis of the recommendations of the international standard ISO 50001 need valid data for the start of the project just as much as they do for the ongoing administration of their energy management system. Data is generally collected in many ways. The more direct and machine readable, the better. Data that goes directly to the system via an HMI is generally especially valid.

HMI: Indispensable interface for EnMS

Successful energy management must be very precisely aware of all energy-related data and be able to collect it in real time as far as possible. Firstly, for the implementation of energy management, it is absolutely necessary to have a wide basis of data with regard to consumption and performance. Secondly, data in real time can put the energy management team in a position to recognize load peaks or unusual consumption immediately and to react to it straight away.

Data from sensors and equipment, both valid and real-time, reaches the system via HMIs that are well integrated into energy management systems. The particular advantage: The data can be collected in an automated manner, but still be checked, prioritized, supplemented or called up and selected for particular situations.

The technical possibilities that HMIs offer means that they are valuable providers of data for energy management systems.

Machine data: Excellent basis for Energy Management

Data that comes directly from machines can generally be processed in an automated manner immediately. Most of all, much different data is available to be called up. It ensures a direct flow of genuine data; error-prone manual inputs are not necessary. However it should nevertheless be possible to prefilter it at the HMI. This way, the selection and quality of the data can already be determined in advance. If the energy management system to be processed is linked to a suitable SCADA system, the data obtained from the equipment directly can be easily used for quick analyses, long-term observation or meaningful forecasts.

Load peaks: Prerequisite for Energy Management Systems

Load peaks are a particular challenge for an energy management system. Ideally, it should react to them. However two things are necessary for this: A SCADA system that can work with this. And most of all, data that can be collected by the consuming devices in real time. Only then is an energy management system in a position to predict load peaks and recommend switching actions.

A permanent flow of data from machines supplies an energy management system with the data that is important for long-term evaluation. This is particularly important with regard to the ongoing verification and updating of the energy management that is recommended in ISO 50001.

Usability decides on the variety of data

Machine data can be prefiltered intelligently and usefully and called up in a targeted manner. This is provided that the HMI is in a position to provide the operator with the necessary means to do this. That means diverse lists that can be quickly ans easily sorted and filtered. Naturally with the possibility to add comments to data or to store data in a targeted manner and call it up again. In doing so, it is not just a matter of the technical possibility, but also the design of the user interface. Functional Multi-Touch is, for example, a current standard for HMIs that allows the user to not just act quickly and correctly, but also to prioritize data without problems and to add comments.

Energy Management: As future-proof as its basis of data

Companies that want to systematically optimize the energy they purchase, their energy performance and energy consumption with an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 must most of all ensure the quality of the base data. Valid data direct from the machines, integrated via modern HMIs and processed with flexible SCADA systems, offers the best basis for lasting success.
