ISO 50001:2011 doesn`t only see to how an Energy Management System should perform. The standard is based on, as are the standards for quality management and environmental management, the so-called PDCA cycle time. Here, P stands for "Plan", D for "Do", C for "Check" and A for "Act".
The use of energy and other resources, such as water or fossil substances, should be transferred over into a controllable process using guidelines and instructions. Consistent energy management isn`t an environmental fig leaf but a process which helps a company get to grips with their consumption and costs, without thereby limiting the volume and quality of their production. In some states there are also concrete tax advantages relating to this. Such as in Germany, for example, an Energy Management System in accordance with ISO 50001 brings reductions in energy tax.
From plant management to all members of staff, all those who play a part in a company are involved, from agreeing on goals to controlling results, right up to qualified procedural steps. Thus, with the ISO 50001:2011, great value is placed on the entire energy management in a company and must be integrated in the complete value chain.
Introduce Energy Management whilst conforming to standards
The core of the new standard is the PDCA scheme: "Plan-Do-Check-Act". This means it involves a four-step-approach.
- Plan: In the first step the actual situation is understood. Based on energy output performance indicators (ENPIs), binding goals and plans are created.
- Do: The plans from Step 1 are implemented.
- Check: The results should be measured, monitored and documented. Were the goals reached the does the production data still correspond with the guidelines?
- Act: Successful steps should be established and developed across the entire organizational system. The corrective action of this Act phase forms the starting point for the next cycle in the ISO 50001 certification process.
The fundamental principles of the ISO 50001:2011 standards clearly show that a functioning Energy Management System must permanently measure, collect, process and analyze consumption and production data. The core instrument for this is an Energy Data Management System (EDMS) which has everything under control, from energy consumption meters, right up to significant software reports.
