zenon 15 is all about IT/OT integration. Many gaps between the two worlds - Information Technology and Operation Technology - are closed with the new version. Data, its collection and further use, e.g. in sophisticated web applications, play a central role. The most important thing here is that all the necessary steps are covered within just one development environment. And all this with reliable security standards.

The highlights mentioned here are only an excerpt of what zenon 15 has to offer. Please refer to the detailed release notes for the complete list of new features.

    IT-OT integration

IT-OT integration – but done right!

The innovations in zenon 15 build bridges between IT and OT technology in many areas. The first example of this is the extended and improved options for using OT data. One new feature is the OT data integration in Excel: Data from the production environment can be easily transferred from the Report Engine to Excel. This opens up the data world of zenon for further use in Excel. This also makes production data more easily accessible for people who are less familiar with OT matters.

    Web Visualization Service

Visualization and dashboards anywhere and at any time

The new zenon version places a large focus on the expansion of the Web Visualization Service. Some of the new extensions contribute to making the WVS even more user-friendly. For example, zenon 15 supports the display of filters in the Alarm Message List (AML) and the Chronological Event List (CEL). The “Extended Curve List” also provides more flexibility and a better overview.

A major innovation in zenon 15 is the possibility to use Batch Control in WVS. This supports the display and control of matrix recipes. Using Batch Control on the web has numerous advantages: maintenance and security are much simpler, and using it on the web makes it easier to install and roll out complex programs in batch production.

In addition, “Automatic Line Coloring”, i.e. the coloring of lines based on their status, can now also be integrated into WVS.

The Dashboard Service has many new widget types. This makes the presentation in the dashboards even more flexible, clearer and more informative.

    zenon on Linux

Linux or Windows? The choice is yours!

The use of Linux as an operating system in automation projects offers numerous advantages: Complete control over the patches that are applied reduces potential risks and threats. License costs and hardware requirements are significantly reduced. However, better suitability for virtualization and containerization also speak in favor of using Linux as the underlying operating system.

The unique advantage that zenon offers: As a project engineer, you do not need to decide between Windows and Linux - only one Engineering Studio is required and the same engineering files are used. This results in interconnectivity between the operating systems and there is no additional engineering effort when combining or switching between Linux and Windows. For example, existing projects can be opened in zenon 15 and transferred to Linux.

With zenon 15 Service Engine on Linux, it can act as a process server for a Linux or Windows-based client, making it possible to use it in the zenon network.

zenon 15 also supports centralized user management via the Identity Service. Remote transport and therefore project download directly from the Engineering Studio is now possible, as well as starting, stopping and reloading the Service Engine from the Engineering Studio.

    Security

Security: Adjustments to user administration and IEC 62443-4-2

Nobody can avoid the topic of cyber security at the moment, either because awareness of the need to secure IT/OT systems is increasing or because various legal requirements have to be met.

To make it easier for zenoneers who create projects in the zenon Engineering Studio to fulfill the requirements of the IEC-62443-4-2 standard, the Online Help of the zenon software platform offers an up-to-date mapping table of the requirements in relation to this standard. This also helps with clarifying requirements at the start of a project.

Of course, the topic of user authorizations also plays a central role when it comes to security. The previous limit of 127 possible different authorization levels in user administration has been broken. The option of 65,535 different authorization levels enables a fine-grained and detailed user authorization that is optimally suited to the security requirements of each project.

In addition, as of zenon 15, user authorization can be created based on the equipment model. This makes it possible to link authorizations to the device that is currently being used.

    zenon Logic

    zenon Logic

zenon Logic also opens up important connections from OT to IT. This includes the new feature that Python scripts can be executed in zenon Logic. Python, a programming language that comes primarily from the IT world, is finding its way into PLC programming. This not only allows the skills of OT and IT experts to be brought together. It also opens up new possibilities in the further development of automation projects, for example with regard to AI applications.

zenon Logic now also offers the option of sharing code via XML in accordance with IEC 61131-10. This gives users the opportunity to use the code in other systems as well.

    Device Management

Software-defined automation with zenon Device Management

With its Device Management, the zenon software platform goes one step further in the direction of software-defined automation. Applications can be easily set up and executed on Linux controllers or in virtual environments.

Projects can be updated smoothly. The zenon Service Engine can be started, stopped or reloaded remotely.

Efficient deployment results from the simultaneous installation of the same project on several devices.

    Connectivity news

Connectivity - the growing superpower of zenon

As usual, numerous additional enhancements can also be found in the drivers and the support of communication protocols.

BACnet Secure Connect, for example, enables secure communication with other networks.

Accordingly configured variables in StratonNG support offline buffering. In this, data is recorded even if the connection to the PLC is interrupted. Communication interruptions can be bridged for up to 48 hours in that way. Events and alarms are generated once the connection has been restored.

The OPC UA driver now supports reading historical data into RDA archives (Real Time Data Acquisition). This allows historical data to be retrieved from third-party OPC UA servers. The data type definitions specified in 1.04 are also supported.

The new EUROMAP77 driver serves as a gateway for the EUROMAP77 standard (OPC UA-based digital interface for machines) and is available for Windows and Linux applications.

The TIA driver supports TIA20 in order to be up to date with Siemens PLCs.

These were just some highlights of the new features of zenon 15. For detailed changes, please refer to the official zenon 15 release notes .
